Manhunt for Suspect After Shooting at Morgan State University Injures Five

Baltimore, MD – Authorities in Baltimore are intensively searching for a suspect following a shooting incident at Morgan State University that resulted in five people being injured. The incident, which occurred late Tuesday, prompted an extended lockdown on campus.

According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, officers from the Baltimore Police Department were on patrol near Morgan State University when they heard gunshots at approximately 9:25 p.m. local time. Within minutes, officers located the victims. In a news conference held early Wednesday, Worley confirmed that all five victims had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The victims, comprising four men and one woman aged between 18 and 22 years old, were treated for what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Notably, four of the victims are students of Morgan State University.

Authorities activated an emergency response for an active shooter situation when officers discovered multiple windows shattered. Students were told to shelter in place for about four hours, as police went from room to room looking for suspects. Classes were canceled for Wednesday.

“BPD, SWAT, along with members from our federal, local, and other jurisdictions came to assist us as we cleared the buildings to make sure we did not have an active shooter,” Worley said. “We did not locate the suspect at this time.”

Shooting Unfolds Following Mister & Miss Morgan State Crowning Event

In the wake of a Mister & Miss Morgan State crowning event at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, a shooting incident occurred as students were en route to a coronation ball. City Council member Ryan Dorsey previously stated that it was believed there were three individuals firing into the crowd. However, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, during a subsequent news conference, revealed that investigators were uncertain about the exact number of shooters involved.

Worley detailed that police responded to the sound of gunshots and observed multiple dormitory windows shattered. Consequently, they initially suspected an active shooter on campus and implemented appropriate safety measures. The shelter-in-place order was lifted at approximately 12:30 a.m. following the clearance of a building by SWAT officers, where a potential suspect may have sought refuge.

The university had recently kicked off its week-long festivities leading up to the homecoming game on Saturday. The crowning of Mister and Miss Morgan State was planned for Tuesday evening at the Murphy Fine Arts Center.

Morgan State University, situated in the residential region of northeast Baltimore, is a prominent public historically black university (HBCU) in Maryland. It holds the distinction of being the largest HBCU in the state, with an enrollment exceeding 9,000 students as of late 2022.
